I was wondering if anyone has combined flannel and non-flannel fabric (cotton quilting fabric) on the same quilt top? I wanted to make a baby quilt and use both on the top and then on the back use all flannel. But I don't know if the combination of fabrics would work on the top. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Of course it will and the baby will like the tactile differences. I would wash all fabrics first when mixing different weaves and textures.

I am sure it would work, but I don't think I would enjoy sewing with the different weights of the fabrics together.

all the time! i use flannels and regular cottons in lots of quilts! they turn out great- are soft, fluffy, cozy and wonderful.

Thank u for this post, I was asking around just the other day on this same subject. I bought a cotton and found a fleece that I wanted to use together. Not sure of the fleece and cotton but why not. Have seen fur and the mtl. they use in a spread, cannot think of the name of it, used together. I want to use it because the fleece has pinwheels in it that the cotton has in it kind of. Will try and see. Any suggestions as not to try it would b great .....but like u, I think anyting can b put together and all of it.......

I mix a lot of fabrics even some specialty ones. I have satins in with cottons in with flannel... they all seem to wash up great and do well in the dryer too!

I have done that successfully. I did a modified log cabin with a flannel center and cotton surround, with a flannel back. I read that flannels can shrink up to 6% and the cottons were allegedly to shrink about 3% so I washed the flannel only first, then washed the finished product. Came out fine without too much shrinkage etc. The finished quilt lays flat and came out really nice. I see a previous post that says to wash both fabrics - sounds like a good recommendation and I'll try that with my next combo quilt. Good luck!

I am not young, but I am an inexperienced quilter. But a lot of apparel sewing transfers to quilting and I've years of experience there. I'm looking forward to mixing chenille, flannel and quilting cotton.

I'm working on quilt blocks that have cotton and silk and even embroidery in them. I also have a set of blocks that I've included satin with my cottons.
