How many times do you was your flannel before you sew it together? I am making a baby blanket with cotton on the front and flannel on the back. I have only soaked it in water and dryed it once. I am making a whole piece blanket. But when I layed it out to baste it with the spray it seemed to stretch like. So do you think I should have washed it a couple of times before making my blanket or do you think it will be alright?

Just washing once is enough. To keep it from stretching so much when you lay it out as a backing, starch and iron it first.

Has anyone used flannel for the batting in quilt? If so, did you like it when finished?

I have not used flannel for the batting but have been told it works well for a summer quilt to help keep its shape. Hope this helps. I have thought about using some myself since we live in Texas.

Flannel works well as batting in a baby quilt because it makes it so soft and cuddly. I always wash and dry it before I use it. I also use flannel when making a table runner because it lies so flat and is fairly thin.

I use it all the time- it is great for the quilts I hand tie and when I use the fluffy ribbed cuorduroy-like material for the back.

I would wash it a second time, I have had some shrink significantly the second time, too. Better safe than sorry :wink: You did prewash the quilting cotton too, right?

I do, it keeps it from stretching so much and it helps keep it shape, especially plaids/stripes.
