I'm going to check out the flannel sale at Joanns this Friday. What yardage amounts should I buy? I love to make rag quilts, but I'm not sure how much to buy of the patterns I like the best.

Thanks

at the sale prices, I would get at least a yard of each fabric choice...or more if you can afford it!!!! BUT...be sure to WASH AND DRY AND IRON each piece of yardage BEFORE you cut it because flannel SHRINKS...don't ask me how I know this to be true...

as to how much to buy....deceide on your colors and then get maybe 8-10 yards for a nice size quilt. remember, there are 2 layers of flannel plus the batting in a rag quilt and you will have a lot of shrinkage with the washing / drying....always better to have more ( leftovers!!) than not enough at those prices!!!! they won't come back until the next Black Friday

I say at least a yard of whatever you like. Maybe two if the deals are really good or there aren't many different flannels that you feel you have to have.

Like jodiemarie said remember to prewash your flannel. My first quilt was made out of flannel and luckily all the quilting books I read told me to prewash the fabrics. I'm sure glad I did because the yardages of flannel I had washed and dried shrunk about two inches.

I did 2 rag quilts myself.I purchase 1 yard of each fabric.
I made my rag quilts w/ 5 layers of flannel
Front & back pieces show so you wil need to plan your desired "look" in advance.
The back of my rag quilt is usually just the same print.
But could be whatever you want.
I also sew a big X in the center of each block before washing

If you don't have a JoAnn's (we don't  ), Hancock Fabric's will have their Blizzard flannels on sale for $1.49 a yard. I am going, but not sure if I will buy any flannel or not.

Best price of the year! I'm buying hundreds of yards charity. Watch for my fundraising post this afternoon
Re: rag quilts, I thought the shrinkage is part of what makes them fluffy?
