My BFF saw an article in a magazine some time ago about how to make a floor cloth. Now she can't find the magazine and doesn't remember which one it was. Have any of you made one? How did you 'finish' it?

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. Making a rug for under my round glass dining room table. I'll do it like my Aunts did, paint a piece of canvas or painters canvas. Put on several coats of background and then the picture itself. It'll be round, just a big larger than my table.

I think I know which one you meant but can't find it myself.
    Go for it, enjoy it.

Seems like I saw an article like that in Mary Janes Farm last year sometime. Don't know what issue, and I gave it away, so I can't look it up.

She is doing one from heavy fabric (lawn furniture pillow type) with a tropical foliage print in the center and borders of a complimentary green. It will be reversible with a slightly different foliage print on the other side. She is not planning on using any batting or interfacing.

The article she saw had mentioned a particular method of 'sealing' or 'coating' the fabric after it was done. This is what she's wanting to know what to use.

i cannot find my book on floor cloths anywhere, when i had big plans, and after not doing anything and thinking, i remember the book used paint, latex, on canvas, hemmed the edges and used poly urethane to finish it, i just remember thinking, would it crack? i believe there was a mention of varnish, however i know that will discolor, and will take forever to dry (done a boat or two in my time, i found several semi informative articles on hgtv, some reason cannot post link, but it does say something about using water soluable varnish (i still think they mean poly urethane, the stuff in the blue can/did not want to use the name), i have used it on with fabric on drink trays, book covers and such, maybe she could check it out, hope this was helpful

make sure to advise her not to use a boat fabric/again/no name/it will not take a finish, to long to post, but if you e me i will explain

Jan - thanks for the info! I will pass it on to my friend. The polyurethane was one she was considering although she also mentioned the decoupage stuff we used eons ago on plaques, etc.
I'm not really sure it needs the finish as the fabric has a feel like it's already coated with something. Might be some of that recycled plastic or something, since it is designed for outdoor furniture.
