A simple manly pattern is a dimensional bow tie out of 5 inch squares. They go together quickly and can be arranged in various patterns. I recently made blocks from a flannel precut 5 inch pieces that look like wool but are flannel. I bought a dark flannel from the same fabric lines for the setting strips and backing. It is very warm and manly looking but easy and looks impressive.

I have made a rail fence quilt in blacks and white with red sashings and it looked very dramatic.
