I was watching my daughter waltz through the house carrying laundry to the washer. A few minutes later she comes traipsing back through but had a finished load of bedding wadded up in her arms. I hear her calling me to come and help he with making her bed and when I went in there I saw an old hand tied quilt.

I asked her where she came across this and she said her Paw Paw gave it to her the last time she went to see him. It was made by my MIL that I was unable to ever meet (she passed before we were dating). I can tell that it was made in the early 70's judging by some of the fabric that was used.

It has a mix of polyester and cotton and is done in long blocks. It is definitely a utilitarian scrappy quilt that was made to keep someone warm during the winter months in New Orleans.

My wife said she remembered the quilt but can not remember if she hand sewn everything or not. I knew she grew up very poor and was born and raised in middle TN not far from our land and then when she was 12 they moved to NO they lived in the lower 9th ward. So the chances of her mom having a sewing machine was slim to none.

I told Holly to take good care of it and what ever she does never let it out of her site!!

I will try and to duplicate the quilt just so my wife will have something that will bring back the memories of her mom but I don't know if I want to try and mix fabrics like she did on the original. I will post a couple of photos of the treasure when my batteries finish charging for my camera.

How cool is that! I can't wait to see the pictures! And weren't you the one saying you had so many other things to do you weren't sure how you were going to fit in any quilting? ;)

What a treasure. I wish I had the quilt my Mom made when we were younger. She used some of our old clothes to make it. She used old cloth diapers as padding. I can still picture sitting in the living room with a glass of wine and hand embroidering the quilt pieces.

That is an awesome idea. I would be touched beyond belief just by the effort regardless of the resulting quilt.

Can't wait to see what you recreate. My family thought quilts were for poor people so we didn't have any. Funny as I don't know how anyone could have been poorer than us.

Okay here they are.....if you can tell me anything about the fabrics or about the years you think they are from. I am thinking old clothes but maybe flour sacks? But there is paisley in there!!
