I am almost ready to free motion my twin size flower girl quilt.
There are sashes all around the quilt. Should I free motion the sashes too, or do each block, stop and pass over the sashes to go to the next block?

I've never used adhesive spray and thought I would use that to see if it makes quilting any easier for me. Or should I use the adhesive batting instead? I want this quilt to be soft and cuddley.

What do you think?

I've not had very good luck with adhesive batting on a larger quilt - I found it hard to get all the wrinkles out and ended up frustrated! I love wool batting for its warmth and the fact it is so light and drapes beautifully...it is pricey, though.

How you do the actual quilting is really up to you - you could do a nice all over design (stipple, for example) that would include the entire top. The advantage of an all over design is there is less starting and stopping.

Good luck - and be sure to post a picture!

I wouldn't use adhesive batting; lots of reports of problems with it. I love the adhesive spray, but it seems as if brand matters. 505 is the best brand to use.

What makes the quilt soft and cuddly is the batting you choose. If you like a high loft, my recommendation is Hobbs 80/20. My personal favorite is Mountain Mist Blue Ribbon 100% cotton, but it is a very traditional batting that requires close quilting. I love that it gets softer and softer with every washing, and that the quilt is thin enough to have a very easy drape.

I used basting spray before I got my frame. It is so much easier than basting or pinning. And I think it holds better. I do baste around the edge of the quilt, because if it shifts at all that is where mine did it. Please post a pic. when you are done. I would love to see it.

Yeah, not a fan of adhesive batting for cuddly quilts.

As for how to quilt, I would be guided mostly by the color of block and sashing. When you are just starting free motion quilting and are not confident of your stitches, you will probably want to match your thread color to the fabric. So if your blocks and sashing are the same color, I would do continuous free motion work. If there is a significant color change, I would quilt them separately, possibly in a different design -- sashings can do well with a scroll, or curvy lines, pebble quilting, waves -- lots of different options.

Have fun. I love free motion quilting -- my favorite part of the process. It does take practice, so just keep at it until it is fun.
