I could recommend both Harriet Hargrave and J. Wagner, but would highly suggest taking a class at a local quilt shop. There is nothing better than getting a hands on experience with a free motion quilter. The instructor can talk while you actually do the work. Unfortunately, a book needs to be held to read. Seriously, usually these classes are only a couple hours, and covers the machine set up and tips that will increase your success rate. You can always refer to books for more ideas, but at that point you will have a basic knowledge. Good luck with this endevour. I think you will find it fun and rewarding.

I found the book, "Pathways to Better Quilting" by Sally Terry helpful. Also, I found quite a few of the quilting books at the library.
