I just finished quilting 2 small quilts to send to Quilts Without Borders. One of the tops sent to me was a log cabin made up of Christmas fabrics, mostly reds and some greens. The backing was solid green.

Since the front had mostly hollys and poinsettas, berries, etc...I decided to use a pattern I had of holly, berries and ribbons. I decided to quilt it in white thread. I thought the white and green on the backing would look good. And that it would blend in on the front since it had some white running through the reds and greens.


Oh...I totally HATED how it turned out. The backing looked fine...the design really popped with the white and green. But the top....the white thread didn't blend into the background at all and seemed to draw attention to itself...which is not what I'd planned at all.

I decided I had ruined that quilt and was so unhappy...it is for a charity...and I wanted whoever the little boy/girl was that received it to have something beautiful in to own. Waaah! I couldn't bear to finish trimming and binding and was grateful that the person who pieced it wasn't going to see the job I'd done on her top.

Then today a strange thing happened. I trimmed it and took another good look. Christmas Elves must have been working during the day that it lay untouched...because it looks great to me now. I really like it and think my quilting was pretty decent...not perfect...but a decent job.

So...What happened??? Did it look OK all along? Or am I just fooling myself now? LOL...this type of thing could make me think I've gone bonkers. <big grin=""></big>

It happens sometimes when you are work so long on a project. That is why everyone always says to put a project away and re-evaluate it later.

No, you haven't gone bonkers. You were probably very tired and just needed some space between you and the quilt. Rest assured there is a person out there who will be thrilled to have this quilt! You 'dun' something good.

As others have said, you are just to close to it when you are working on it. You consciously or unconsciously remember every little thing that didn't go quite like you wanted it to. I can't even see what a quilt looks like until a week or more after the last stitch. Glad you came around to liking this one, that is what keeps us quilting.

That has happened to me. Finished quilting a project and think blech! Come back to bind it a few days later or look at it a month after it's finished and think......hey, that's not too bad.

That can work in reverse for me also - think something is great and look at it later and don't like it. I guess most of the time distance can be our friend. Maybe we just focus on the whole thing rather than a small part of it. Glad it turned out for you.

Sometimes we envision a certain outcome and when the vision and actual outcome don't match, we are disappointed. Time gives us perspective.

We are our worst critics. I am sure some child will love it and think it is perfect. I am glad after a few days away from it you are now happy with it.

Sometimes the image I have in my mind is the only one I can measure my success, and when it not that exact image I get sooo disappointed. But like you if I just give it some time I can adjust that "image" I had when I started , and realize what I ended up with is just a good as the one I had in my mind.
