Does anyone know how to make an appliqued quilt look like something is closer and something is farther back. I am making a type of landscape quilt with applique, not quite sure of color choices to make something recede in the distance and something in the foreground to look like it is near. any suggestions would be appreciated. for example, I want the cabin to be in the background and a bird on a tree to be in the foreground.

Denise, the only thing I can tell you is the object in the foreground should be larger in scale to the object in the background, you probably already knew that much!
Cant wait to see what you are doing!

Do a vanishing point like you would if you were drawing a picture or what mg said. You can also achieve depth with color like tumbling blocks that look 3-D light on top dark to left med to right.... Decide where the sun is in your picture the reflections will give yousome depth. Clear as mud isn't it :? Look up the qulter Katie Pasquini Masapoust (sp) she really adds depth to her work.

Hi, I have done landscape painting and the only thing that may help is that the colours in the back should be lighter and as it comes forward it should be darker. For instance say you are painting mountains the ones in the background are lighter and the ones near to you will be darker. Hope this helps.

I am putting a bird in the foreground and I want it to stand out. The objects in the back are lighter. The bird is a teal blue, would it look better outlined with a thin darker teal on the same side as the trees have shadowing? I also added some batting behind the bird so it is not as flat as the background. Thanks for your input.

I was going to say, larger in the front and extra batting on the larger objects, so it seems that you are on the right track. I don't claim to be a know it all, but thats what I would have done.
