Default Question for 'new' Bernina 830 owners -

First off - why in the world did Bernina use the 830 number again? It just makes things confusing!

Anyway - for the 'new' Bernina 830 machine owners -

I've read several posts by different people (so it isn't just operator error/incompetence) saying that their 830s have spent a LOT of time back at the shop for repairs and/or adjustments.

Is the machine worth the aggravation?

I probably shouldn't be responding to this as I don't have an 830; but here goes. I was told that they used the 830 name again because the old 830 was such an outstanding machine. I purchased the Artista 200 as soon as it came out. For the first 3 years, I detested that machine. It had so many "bugs". It was constantly being repaired or upgraded. After 3 years, it started working perfectly and it was well worth all I went through. I love that machine and haven't had a problem in years. I would think the 830 will be the same. I think Bernina is still getting the "bugs" out. Eventually, it should be worth it. I'll be honest, I really wanted an 830; but I didn't want to go through the problems of a new machine on the market. My old Artista 200 is problem free so I'll keep it awhile longer.

I would buy only if the dealer is trusted and well established in the community. I have given buying a new do it all machine myself but honestly 95% of my sewing is straight stitch. I opted for a Brother PS 1500. I bought a used older model Bernina that has all the bells and whistles I would use and I don't use most of those. I saved thousands by buying the new Brother straight stitch only and the used Bernina.

I have an 830 Record that I bought used and have had it several years. I used it for piecing quilts all the time until I got my FW. I have not had any problems with my Bernina

I was asking about the 'new' version that (I think) costs between $10,000 and $12,000.

I talked to a sewing machine dealer and he told me that Bernina is having a LOT of problems with the new 830. And yes, I wish when they come out with a new machine, give it a new name, for pete's sake.

I have heard a lot of bad about the new 830, but I don't have one. I have the old Artista 180 and I absolutely love it for embroidery. I had a chance to buy a new 830 for $8000, but passed it up because of the bad reviews. I wonder how the new 700's are doing. I haven't heard much about them yet.

I have 3 Bernina's - 530, 200 and 830. I love them all. The 830 does fabulous embroidery and dual feed makes piecing fast and accurate. I bought it used from a friend - her mom passed away and she already had one. There has been a learning curve for me but that makes it fun and interesting. LOVE the jumbo hoop and that the mega hoop does not have to be repositioned when embroidering. I would buy it used from a reputable dealer. I also love the 530 and 200.

I have test drove an 830 and loved the machine but just couldn't bring myself to spend $10,000+taxes. I ended up with a used Husqvarna machine for embroidery and sometimes I still wish that I had the 830 but instead I have $7500 still in my bank account :-)
