Another vote here for Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Quilting. Unlike the Fons and Porter book, in which you learn the techniques as you complete a particular project, the Better Homes Complete Guide covers specific techniques, not based on projects that you might not want to do. It's a great reference source I go to again and again, and it does have very nice photos rather than line drawings.
Remember the teakettle...it is always up to its neck in hot water, yet it still sings!
A Proper Tea is much nicer than a Very Nearly Tea, which is one you forget about afterwards. ~ Winnie the Pooh (A.A. Milne)
I love the book Around the Block. All sorts of blocks in differnt sizes
The Quilter's Ultimate Visual Guide" is my go-to book when in doubt. So, another vote for this one.

I have the same book as Susie, and it is terrific. Tells you everything from start to finish.
Life is not a movie. No one is going to yell "CUT" when you make a mistake. - Anne L. Fulton

Hello, TracyLynn
Check your local thrift shops and flea markets. Better Homes and Gardens "Complete Guide to Quilting" is a good resources and their is a website Alibris.com that is really good and the books are really cheap. If you have local fabric store nearby and they have coupon sales you can get basic books. Just some suggestions to help happy quilting.
