I've been doing hand applique for 10 or more years. and have recently heard of a method where you build a unit (like a butterfly, perhaps) on something like a light-weight pellon. Then you put it the unit along with the rest of the units onto the background. I need more information about how that works.

Welcome from St.Louis! We had a guy speak to our guild and showed us that piled up unit thing, but he didn't use pellon, just the bottom layer, but he started from the top and clipped away the unders with each step. Does that make any sense?

Welcome from northern California. The method you describes sounds like a form of trapunto.--which I haven't tried yet. Mostly I hand piece while riding the BART train home after work. So relaxing. I have other projects which I machine sew too.

I need to know more about that technique. I will be watching this topic. Oh but someone was telling me just yesterday about landscaping like that and taking away portions--I can't wait to see how that all works. She promised me to show me where I can see it on line. Anyone know about this technique?
