    Default Hand appliqueing

I am going to attemp to do my first Hand Applique quilt. Is it best to blind stitch around the flowers and leaves or should I do a blanket stitch? What is you opinion? Any help is appreciated

It is totally up to you. I love applique and sometimes I do blanket stitch and sometimes blind stitch. Right now I am in a stage of blind stitch. I am focusing more on obtaining nice curves so the blind stitch goes better with my goal.

It depends on what you are appliquéing. Buttonhole stitch works best for appliqueing shapes down that have the seam allowance already turned under. In needle turn appliqué you turn the edge under as you blind stitch it down.

if doing needle turn applique you do a blind stitch- but it depends on the look you want- blanket stitching is going to show- will that enhance the applique appearance/add to the design? or do you want the appliques to look like a picture/part of the fabric with no stitches showing? it is your choice & kind of dependant on what it is you are doing.

I use blanket stitch (I call it buttonhole stitch) with fused shapes when I want a primitive or whimsical effect (usually with black #8 Perle cotton.) If I want a more traditional or elegant look, I will do needle turn with a blind stitch.

If you look at my icon, I did the blanket stitch around EVERYTHING. Sun, flowers, vines...it did drive me a little nuts, but it turned out great! I would definitely recommend that method. Especially since you can use a lot of variety with the stitch itself. You can do all even stitches, alternate short and long stitches, or angle them to the left or the right. Good luck!

I understand that some are using a fusible product on the back side of the applique, and then are using it as their template for doing the needle turn work.

Which applique product do you use?

    Thanks for the info!!

I am using the needle turn method. - it seems to look nice - and you can barely see the stitches. I hope i'm doing it right. Thank you all your imput - i really appreciate it. I have a lot of flowers and leaves and stems to do. It's worth it.
