My mother passed away (age 88) last week, and this was one of the things from her cedar chest. I'm not really sure of the intent, but I would like to use it in a project. I don't even know if she did it, or her mother. I don't think I've seen it before, and it is definitely old. Mother did exquisite hand work. I'd sure be happy to get ideas from all of you about what to do. Make a drawing of your ideas, please.

It would be interesting to make that a centerpiece to a quilt.

Those are beautiful - you don't see handwork like that much at all. I would back it with linen and use them as a table runner (like for a side board or dresser maybe) or possibly place mats.

I am sorry for your loss. Her cutwork embroidery is really beautiful. Use it for a table topper or dresser scarf. I think that is what it was intended for.

I also think it was meant to be a table cloth or dresser scarfs as it is embroideried on linen. That is what I would do with it. Not a quilt. You could finish it with some kind of crochet lace around it.
