Which do you do first the hand or machine quilting?

Becky could you be more specific. Are you doing both? Tell us more about what you are trying to do.

I have a two block pattern, one is a log cabin type with a lot of seams the other is a square in a square which I thought I'd hand quilt in the square part. So I just was wondering if I do decide to machine quilt the log pattern part which to do first.

I would do the machine quilting first since it goes faster and it'll help hold your quilt in place while you're hand stitching.

Rule #1 around here about such things is ... NO RULES

seriously, you should consider which way will make the whole project easier for you.

if you plan to machine stitch in the ditch, i'd do that first. otherwise i'd probably do the hand stitching first.

i can't wait to see what the "poll results" are.

I agree with Debbie... especially if your machine quilting is going to go through the center of your quilt.

I'd do the machine stitching firs. Then when you do your hand stitching, it will be more stabile and less likely to slip.

definately machine first. That way if for some weird reason it puckers it will be easier to fix and you wouldn't want it to do anything to your hard work where you hand quilted.
