I'm interested in what kinds of things you all have at your hand-quilting spots around the house....

A gal in my grams' quilt group has a 2x4 piece with a nail sticking up to hold the thread spool ;)

What's your notions like for hand quilting?

I presently have 3 baskets, all stacked on top of each other w/in each a different hand project. Also my sewing 'tin' w/all my necessities and a small table w/a very small drawer w/all the extra of my necessities in case I lose something in the chair or basket and don't want to take the time to look. Which I always do later when I lose 2 things...makes the search worth it then. I keep an empty kleenex box next to my chair also for all those snippet of threads and such. For 2 reasons...a good place to catch it all and in case I toss a piece of importance, then I know right where to find it...which I have done! I also take a straight pin w/a good round head and push thru my threader so it is always easy to find. Skeat (so sorry I have nothing of too much creation or originality)

I don't have anything creative either. To my left on the end table between the recliners, I have a little basket to hold thimble, threads and needle packet that I'm using. My half of the table has my thimble, a glass jar of pens & pencils and the freezer paper templates as I peel them off the fabric. I also have a 3 light pole light.

On the right of my chair is a little wood chest with high edges where my iron sits, a can with scissors & rotary cutter, my rulers are propped against it. In front of that is my 3 drawer plastic stackable with all my threads and needles. I put my cut/press board on top of it if I have to get up to do something.

Because I do most of my hand quilting at church, I have a portable tin container (presently a Fons & Porter kit) wiith a hinged lid. Inside I have a needle threader, round tipped scissors, a needle case, needle puller, two sizes of thimbles ( my fingers seem to change sizes sometimes), and a fine hooked crochet hook (to catch threads underneath)and a seam ripper. These are the tools I USE when I hand quilt. I don't have to carry thread with me, but there are thread spool holders that look pretty nifty. :lol:

since i mainly hand quilt with 2 inch squares, i keep my squares in plastic cracker trays from wal mart.i keep a large serving tray at my chair as a work suface to keep things contained and i keep my notions in an old sewing basket on a table at my side. i did treat myself by making a doily covered pincushion(really big) because i pin ALOT.

my work station was a small chest of drawers right under a sunny window. sadly, my cat thought it was her work station, too. we tossed a coin and she won. now that she's gone, i can't use that again.

Hi,
I have little handquilting kits in almost every room in the house. Each is a small tin, plastic box or minature tote bag. Each is outfitted with embroidery scissors, needles, at least two thimbles, one for my right middle finger and one for my left thumb. I have two thread cradles which are a metal pin that will hold a spool of thread that can hang around my neck or I have a little wooden rack that holds a spool of thread, my scissors, a tiny pincushion and a pin to hang my thimble on. At the larger of my two floor frames station I have a pair of hemostats to pull needles with. At the other stations I have little fifty cent size pieces of jar opening mats to do the same thing with. You can cut at least 4 or 5 our of one of those rubber jar opening mats. I usually baste with curved safety pins so I usually just throw the pins I remove in what ever container is holding the rest of my supplies. Needless to say I have at least a thousand of those safety pins distributed among the various stations. Each of my stations also contains somekind of pin cushion. I have all kinds from the tiny ones you can make like a ring that are made out of a plastic soda bottle cap to various decorative ones that were made by other quilters and given to me as gifts or favors.
If I get energetic I will line up my stations and take some pictures to post. Don't hold your breath.

Chele, I like your "tool roll up". I printed the directions, and will have to make one for myself, and most likley for my quilting buddies! :lol: :lol:

chele - that is really nice for traveling. AND for xmas gifts for sewing friends and non-sewing friends alike. after all, everybody tears something while on the road.
