Default Measuring before and after - - -

Just wondering -

For those that measure a top before it's sandwiched - do you measure it after it has been quilted and washed?

If you have - are the dimensions still the same?

Some battings will shrink a lot. If I want a flat quilt after washing I pre shrink my fabric and batting and have very little measurement difference.

No, I don't bother. Exact measurements are not a concern for me. I prefer gifting charity quilts without washing. Just my opinion.

Only if I need to know the measurements. I've not seen much shrinkage.

I don't measure the completed quilt at all.

never measure a completed quilt , but then I never make a quilt that needs to be any specific size either.

Yes, occasionally, if I am selling the quilt or entering it into a show and I want to provide accurate measurements. Yes, the finished quilt is somewhat smaller than the quilt top was, but it is not significant enough for me to have any concerns about covering a person or a bed, or being displayed. It might be .75" shorter and .50" narrower on a long-twin size than it was before quilting and washing.

Using Hobbs 80/20 batt my quilts are about a 1/2 inch smaller both ways after washing. I can stretch the edges almost back to the original measurement by pulling so it is the quilting and batting shrinkage that contracts it.

Charity quilt or not, I would not gift an unwashed quilt. IMHO. Just me. Who wants to be the recipient of a soiled/dusty quilt.
