I'm going to make a dust ruffle for our queensize bed.
Our old waterbed had a ruffle that was velcroed on.
I saved the ruffle. We had to buy a new organic mattress and I don't want to velcro this ruffle on.
The mattress is 60X80, do you make the piece that goes between the mattresses exactly this size? Or do you make it slightly larger? My concern is if I make it exactly 60X80 and stitch on the prefinished ruffle and it is slightly to small will it make the ruffle stick out funny? I imagine the quilt will make it lay down right anyway won't it?
Any advice would be appreciated. :D

I have made a dust ruffle before and what I did was go to the thrift store and bought a fitted sheet the same size as the bed. I put it on the box springs and marked with a marker where I wanted to sew the ruffle on so that it would "hang" right and then sewed the ruffle on the line I marked. I am not a fan of using just a flat piece because it always seemed to me it moved around everytime I changed the sheets. With a fitted sheet it doesn't move at all. You just have to make sure that the old sheet you use is the same depth as your box springs.

I have made them, I measure the box spring, then add my seam measurement for the ruffle. I normally use an old sheet to sew the ruffles to, so there's some cutting needed to make it fit.

Be sure you go to the outside edging of the box spring with measurements.

I usually HAVE to make my own dust ruffles because most of our beds are really high..... antique ones. I use the fitted sheet method like MaryMac explained.... they work great.

This is what I do..for several yrs I've changed out my ruffle to match the bed cover. Take your ruffle and sew a header to the top--like for putting a curtain rod thru. Buy some safety pins 2-3 inches and slide the mattress to give access. Pin the 'header' randomly around the top of the box spring. So easy to remove & launder--no removing mattress. I love this method and no damage to box spring at all.

Mary, what a fabulous idea. I usually buy flat sheets at thrift store and mark it on the springs, etc., but never thought of using a fitted one. Next time I'll do it your way! Jan
