It's so pretty I would keep going and make it fit the bed!

Perhaps this... Your bed is approximately 60x78. You have the width already covered by your stars. Add a row at the bottom to give you a bit of length then put a dark blue star fabric (Civil war era) or dark red star pattern solid border all the way around to give you the overhang you desire for your bed quilt. 90x100 is a good size overall but remember, a border just frames the design of your quilt. I design the interesting parts of my queen size quilts to be 60x72 and then use the border to emphasize the work I did in the main pattern. It also helps me make the bed. Easy to get it right, first time, every time. LOL. Funny thing is, since I made my first quilt for MY bed (and didn't give it away), my bed is usually made in the AM because I like looking at MY work.

I think you will always regret it if you don't make it larger. I know I would. You can enlarge it in so many ways, as mentioned above: sashing strips, more stars, putting the stars you already made on point. It doesn't have to be borders.

Ok here is a learning question...because I am too inexperienced to know the answer. What if you made another set of blocks stretching lengthwise and cut them down the middle and put half on one side of the quilt and half on the other? Is this a no NO...and it is an unwritten rule that you make a quilt so that it fits without resorting to such actions? I get that this is "your quilt so do what pleases you" and you can make a quilt that evolves as it goes along, but what are the general rules..if any?

That idea works. I have a perfect top for the quilt on my bed (60x78), I then took one of the fabrics in it and made a 4 inch border, outside that border, I took the same blocks I had made the top out of and cut them in half. Sewed them end to end to make another border. Finished up with another border of another fabric in the main quilt. Itz beautiful. Quilting is an art form, you are the artist. Nothing is out of bounds. The principle behind quilting is like most other arts... learn your craft technically, then take it where YOU want it. Many of my quilting friends don't understand my quilts as they are being pieced but appreciate the end result. tim in san jose

I agree! You have gotten so much done and enjoyed making the stars...I would continue until it is just right!

Pieced borders will raise the quilt from ordinary to spectacular. Particularly made from fabrics in the quilt.
Why be an ordinary quilter when you can make extraordinary quilts? And there is something exceedingly luxurious about full hangovers on a bed. That doesn't sound right but quilters know what I mean
