Thread: has anyone made a quilted shower curtain?

i would appreciate some suggestions, i want to make a shower curtain for my guest bath in our vacation home. i want to piece it like a quilt- at least a portion of it. my questions are: A. should i line it? (I'm thinking yes) and B. should i quilt it?
i thought that i would use no batting, but line it with a solid and then maybe some very basic SITD just to keep it from billowing or poofing out.(i will have a plastic liner - this is mostly for decorative purposes) am i on the right track? i've made shower curtains before, but never pieced like a quilt-all those little seams to fray.ohh noo!

I have seen a quilted shower curtain- looked just like a quilt. She used the pinch-clip shower rings. I have been thinking I would like to make one too. Have this great CATERWAULING fabric......would love to use that fabric to re-decorate my bathroom. Good Luck.

I am going to use flannel in place of batting and LA it with a meander, I dont want the quilt seams to start to sag and make the shower curtain lose its shape. I may sew a pocket on the back of the top boarder and hang it like any other rod pocket curtain, I really am not a fan of those shower curtain hooks. I am thinking about making 2 panels so that they hang on each side instead of a wide curtain that needs to be pulled open and closed..

The mother of a good friend made one for her. The major part was a heavy weight muslin. At the bottom , about 18" or a little more, she appliqued dresden plates. Yes she quilted them.
It was gorgeous.

I made on several years ago - used light weight batting and put tabs at the top like in the picture. When I redecorated I merely took the tabs off ( I had put them on after quilt was done so they were easy to take off) and I had a very pretty lap quilt.

I would definitely line it so you won't have any raw edges out in the open. I would use something light weight for the lining, maybe even another shower curtain, that way you will have the basic size. You won't want to use any batting as that will make it too heavy, especially for a tension rod. Yes, on the quilting, that way you can keep basic quilt traditions. You can get as fancy as you want with the stitching, don't limit yourself to STID. If you don't use batting, STID will become invisible.
