I bought 1.5 yards of each of the colors (pink, purple, orange, green-more lime, aqua and navy) to do some type of log cabin or rail fence (see the one here about mid way down http://www.generations-quilt-pattern...t-pattern.html ). I really like the rail fence one and it would be a lot easier than the log cabin.

This fabric has some sheen to it so I was wondering if it stays like that after being washed? Also, I need a black or really dark gray that would go well with this fabric (if it holds it's sheen, it would need to be similar). Any suggestions? One thing about this line of fabric, I saw a preview quilt made with this fabric and the colors were totally different. The preview colors were deeper and more rainbow looking. The actual colors are more mod-70's. The green is very lime/avacado, the purple is more of a brownish plum and the pink is a little off as well.

Okay. I just did some rearch to find the image I saw as a preview for this fabric (I found it from a google search of rainbow quilts a few months ago). I couldn't find the web page but found the exact image here on our board (http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...hed-t6327.html. Apparently, it was a quilt made several years ago --it is gorgeous. It is sad that somebody used this image as an ad for the Moda Simply color fabrics. Now I know that my quilt will not turn out how I was hoping. That is disappointing. However, I am simply in love with catchergirl01's rainbow quilt. Seeing it again has now swayed me back to the log cabin.

The two quilts you are looking at are really pretty, but I'm not sure where the ombre comes in. The two quilts you shared links to look like careful placement of blender fabric, where the color is consistent thru the whole piece of fabric, and many different fabrics were used, not ombre. Were you planning on cutting squares rather than strips and letting the ombre work as the strips? That would work for the rail fence, but not the log cabin. I guess I'm just confused. Or maybe I haven't had enough coffee, probably both...

Having looked at both rainbow rail fences, I prefer the one that does NOT have the black. Now that is just my personal opinion, and you should do what you like better. Both rainbow rail fence quilts are nice, so I guess that it's just a matter of personal choice. I guess that I am not much help to you!

Paperprincess--the ombre goes from dark to medium to light and then back to medium and dark from selvage to selvage (so, where the fold is, it is the lightest spot). You would cut the fabric "length of fabric" dividing it where you want the next value of color to be (from the selvage moving towards the center of the fabric, the darkest colors runs for about 12 inches, the medium dark for about 5 inches, the medium for about 5 inches and the lightest for about 5 inches). So, buying one yard of the fabric could give you 5 different shades of the same color. You just cut it in strips running LOF and you will have several strips of several different color values.

Hi AngelinaMaria, I understand how the ombre runs, but I was thinking that you were going to cut the fabric WOF, across the ombre. Cutting it LOF makes total sense. See, I just needed more coffee!

I only drank a half cup of coffee this morning as well. Just finished the half I left and feel much better now. So after doing some more research, it appears that there was some Moda Ombre fabrics in the 2008-2009 period that was the rainbow hue I was wanting. The just released Moda Ombre fabrics from Simply Color are more 70's mod looking and I am sad that I won't be able to make a log cabin like in the photos. I imagine I could do something similar with Moda marbles or batiks but it would be so hard to assemble the right fabrics as I have very limited LQS choices so it would have to be online and it is so hard to get the right color to show up on your monitor so it would be a gamble picking the colors.

I know you can get color charts with actual swatches for Moda marbles, Kona solids etc,. so you know what you are going to get. I was curious as to how much they were. Boy you really have to be a dedicated quilter with deep pockets:

I have a Kona solids color chart (got that on a good sale with shipping already free). That Moda one only includes marbles so it isn't even the whole Moda solid line. I have purchased several different moda marbles charm packs to see the colors (citrus, pastel, brights, warm, etc.) but you have to keep them in order and refer to the chart on the back to see the color # and I haven't been able to amass different shades of the same color by doing that. There is one website that will sell all the marbles, in charm size I believe, with a sticker on them with name but that pack is almost $85!! That would be the same as purchasing 10 charm packs of 42 charms each so 420 pieces. I am sure there is probably only 100 or less marbles so that is a pretty high premium for the name stickers.

I bought one version with the Hoffman batiks and the cards for Jinny Beyer's solids collection. They are nice and helpful for color comparisons.
