Help... 12" Farmers DAughter
#2
That is a 5 patch style block and it can be increased to 12" but it gives you some really funky math. Is there any way you can make it at the 10" the pattern calls for and just add a 1" frame all around?
My calculator tells me that you'd have to cut the 2.5" squares as 2.9". You might get it to work by cutting them at 3" and adjusting your seam allowance a little more than (a smidge to the left) 1/4". Cut your half square triangles an inch larger than it calls for, assemble into squares and trim them down to the same size as the squares and then sew them with the same plus size seam allowance. It's going to take some finessing to get the blocks to the perfect 12.5" unfinished size but it can be done.

Diane, Believe it or not, never discovered a good way to do it, but a quilting buddy suggested making the 10" & adding an extra row of background fabric to bring it to the needed 12". Mine was for a sampler wall hanging, so it worked well & looked fine. Elenore Burns has a pattern for 12" FD in her Quilt Blocks on American Barns, that I bought after I sewed my block. Hope this helps.

Thanks Merry. I have the Eleanor book and it shows one way and my friend is having a devil of a time getting it to come out right. Yesterday I was browsing Eleanors' videos and found one that had the instructions but they were not the same as the book. I am just going to try it and see what happens.

Haven't made the one in Elenore's book yet. May check on her site for corrections in the book. I have started the wall hanging (clothes on line) & there is a correction for that one.
We used the pattern on Quilt Blocks Galore and had some trouble getting that to come out right.
Will put one together from E.B.'s book today & see how that goes. Keep me posted on how yours is coming along.
