I am interested in upgrading from my Janome 5,000 to a sewing/embroidery machine.
After seeing each,I am totally lost & do not want to purchase new but a demo model,trade in or private sale is my wish.
I do craft sewing & am a newbie to quilting & like the idea of built in quilt stitches,thread cutter, a variety of hoop sizes being included,along w/ability to download embroidery program from the computer. Not too sure I need a model w/USB but then again maybe

What is your model & why did you choise it over another model

Start with what exactly you want to do. For example, if you want to do quilting and also want to do embroidery, my advice is to get one machine for quilting (maybe a Janome 6600) and a machine that will be dedicated to embroidery. That way you can be quilting on a machine while your embroidery is working away (and you just get up once in awhile to change thread colors on the embroidery machine).

I really think the two-machine approach is both more economical and more satisfying.

Try locating a Bernina 440 QE, it is the Quilters Edition. The 500 series is replacing the 400 series. It has an embroidery unit available,as well as the BSR, which is the stitch regulator. It might be worth checking out. My daughter has one and I wish I would have bought one after using hers.

If you do not get a machine with USB I think you either are stuck with that brand of embroidery cards or you have to have a magic or amazing box to convert designs..

I agree you do want the USB. I have the Janome 11000 SE and love it for both sewing and embroidery. Easy to use for everything.

Ditto what Ruby said above. I love my Janome 11000SE, and use it a lot for quilting, embroidery and making kids clothes. It is a great machine as far as I'm concerned, and when I bought mine it was several thousands of dollars less than the Bernina.

I bought a Bernina 450 in January. LOVE IT! It does not come with the embroidery add on but I'm not a big embroidery fan anyway. I can always buy it later if I change my mind. I think that the 500 have a smaller stitch width, if that matters to you. I think the 500's have a 5mm width, while the 400's have a 9mm. It might be worth talking to the dealer about the specific differences. Good Luck!
