Hi all... I'm doing a quilt for a niece, (wedding). She's into celebrating solstice and the other earth type holidays (Beltane?), etc. I'm not of her faith, but I'd like to make something that would be meaningful to her for her wedding. I'm not sure which of her holidays would/could have a tie-in to a wedding theme (new beginnings, new day?, forever relationships? etc.)

If there are any quilters here who are familier with these holidays, perhaps celebrate these holidays... would you have any ideas, pattern names, color choices ... advice for me?

I realize religion can be touchy/taboo subject. So let's not 'go there', okay? Please understand that I'm not promoting or er 'demoting' any particular belief system. I simply wish to show respect for my niece. If you have ideas, but don't feel comfortable replying to the thread, just pm me with your ideas.

    Thanks all!

Just an Idea....Look-up Druid. They were the nature people. Lots of Sun stuff in gold. Another idea is lookup the suns that are shown on the program "SUNDAY MORNING" on CBS.

Look up "handfasting" for some ideas - ribbony kind of designs. Broom imagery. Moon and stars. Anything earthy like seasons of the year. Crystal and other shiny stuff. Look up "Wicca". I am sure that she will love it!

well lots of green earthy tones is what i use. also black or white backgrounds are always good for these types of quilts. depending on the religion she dose practice celtic knot patterns are always a good pattern choice. You can always google it and see what comes up.

Celtic knots was my first thought. Google Pyramid online store and look at some of the things they offer. Just clothes and home dec, but you'll get a good picture of what you're asking.

What about a 'Tree of Life' theme. Maybe applique a large tree in the center of the quilt, if you applique. Also, the moon is important, according to a former roommate I had that was 'into' the same field of thought.

    Wow... great ideas....

    Let's see...

Seasons, Tree of Life, sun/moon/stars, use greens, use of black and white backgrounds. YES She LOVES blacks and white. I didn't realize that was part of it. Celtic knots are interesting. I don't know if she's into those or not, same thing with druids. But they are good places to start with. Thanks for the links, I'll look those up. Handfasting is a good idea too, although she doesn't practice like medieval stuff, there's bound to be some great info there too. Thank you all! I can see that there's a lot of imagry with this. All good stuff.

The 8 main Wiccan holidays are Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Lammas, Ostara, Beltane, Litha and Mabon.

Samhain is Full Harvest & is (basically) a combination of Halloween and Day of the Dead.

Yule is mid-winter & return of the Sun and longer warmer days

Imbolc is the time of Blessing of the seeds and consecration of agricultural tools.

Lammas is first reapings of the harvest. It means 'loaf-mass ', a time when newly baked loaves of bread are placed on the altar.

Ostara is basically Easter - rabbits, eggs

Beltane is midpoint in the Sun's progress between the spring equinox and summer solstice. This is when you have the Maypole dance.

Litha is mid-summer; longest day of the year.

Mabon is ritual of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth and a recognition of the need to share them to secure the blessings of the Goddess and the God during the winter months. It's Thanksgiving for pagans.
