I am unable to come up with the mathematices for a square in square pattern that comes out to be 4 1/2 inches unfinished.

Also I need to do a flying geese that measures 2 1/2 x 4 1/2.

I do not want to do a paper piece mthod. I like cutting the pieces out.

Any help available out there:)

Thanks
Bebe

I have this great flying geese ruler- by Lazy Girl Designs
it is just called the "Flying Gesse x4 no math ruler" I have absolutely loved it- I can do the square in a square to equal 4 1/2 inches but can't explain how- it has got to be on the web

For the geese, cut your rectangle 4.5"x2.5". Your squares should be cut 2.5".

But this is only if you are doing the method of sewing a diagonal line across the side squares, which is my preferred way of doing it. Sounded like the OP likes to cut out triangles and I can't help with those measurements.

I don't have the easy 'square in a square' bookmarked, but here is the 4-in-1 flying geese method

Maybe the thing to do is make one using this method, then take it apart to measure each of the triangles. Or would it work to cut each triangle as if you were going to make half-square triangles? That would be a 2-7/8" square cut diagonally for each of the corners and a 4-7/8" square cut diagonally for the larger part of the block.

Use Eleanor Burns method and she has the rulers as well. Love this method. Didn't make sense to me how it would come out right until I did it following the instructions. I have used it several times. Is great!
