Default Help with fabric

I went to my first quilters guild meeting last night (SQUEE!!) and they are doing a Japanese lantern block thingy and I thought I'd participate. The pattern instructions say to use Oriental fabric...went I went online to Joann to search "oriental fabric" I got one hit...and I didn't like it. My question is...

What makes a fabric "oriental"? Can you show me examples from your stash?

Asian is the new word for that genre. Check out this slide show.

Not from my stash, but there are 2 choices here for Asian and Japanese fabrics - Sale and New.

You won't find a very good selection of Asian prints (Oriental designs) at JoAnn. They tend to come from higher end manufacturers that cater to quilt shops. But there are plenty of on line resources for Asian prints. these should get you started.

I have always found great Asian fabrics at Shibori Dragon -- in fact I have a hard time not finding something I like there.

That link was a little wierd on my computer -- here is the link to their Asian fabrics:

Here is their Kona Bay:

Oh, i love that pattern..just finished a lap quilt of Chinese Lanterns. As others have said, Asian is the category but to me, anything that has an Asian look to it works. Dragonflies, butterflies, large flowers, goldfish...etc....it's your quilt, use what appeals to you. Have fun, you'll love the finished quilt.

Kona Bay has wonderful Asian prints.

After this go to www.quiltshops.com and search for the particular ones you like -- you'll find who sells them and can shop price that way, too.
