I bought some flannels at JoAnn's, most of them pilled. Only one didn't, I 'd bought 8 yards to make my DH a robe. The others became quilt backs. Here's my DH in his robe with his toy from our nephew.

Wow queen size is pretty big for a 3 year old. A lot of the flannels do pill, that is the reason I stopped making the rag quilts.
I recently made two rag quilts that consisted of a lot of 100 percent cotton and very little flannel. I must have gotten a bazillion little 1/2 inch strings all over them, even though I changed the lint trap frequently. The little strings come from where the fabric is clipped and very very hard to remove and stop from recurring.

I bought a Schticky ... you know the thing on TV, except bought it at the store.
Worked for me, had 3 in the box for $6.00. Don't know how long they will last but cheaper than disposable lint rollers.

I have found that the dryer balls or a clean sneaker help a lot and also take it outside and shake the daylights out of it.cotton fuzz is biodegradeable so doesn't hurt anything.
