I found this tutorial on line about how to do flying geese a new way.

You fold the triangle piece in 1/2, wrong side to wrong side and press. You then take your 2 squares right side to right side and place it like a sandwich on the triangle piece. You make sure that it is lined up on the bottom and not the folded top. you sew on one side, turn and you have beautiful flying geese with a 1/4" on the top. Problem they are not completely sewn down. How would you do that or or they supposed to be open? Thank you so much for your answer.

These are called "dimentional" flying geese. Don't sew them down. They really look great in a quilt. Wouldn't use them for a baby or childs quilt though.

This is the only way I make flying geese units now. No one knows the geese are 3D unless they look awfully close.

But doesn't that make the quilt heavier because of the double layer of the geese?

I made a border of flying geese for a queen size quilt using this method. I didn't notice any difference in weight. It's just not that much extra fabric.
