I would put baking soda in a cup and enclose it in the bag of fabric. I have used baking soda in a lot of things and it does pretty good removing the smells. Let us know what you try and how things work out.

Lay them directly on the grass early in the morning, while the sun isn't too hot. The nascent chlorine given off from the dew should take care of the smell. I've never had a problem with fading, even here in Texas.

Years ago I had a house fire and after washing and dry cleaning some new clothes still smelled smoky untill I hung them in the outside line and let the rain and sunshine work their magic. They finally came out sweet smelling.
