How about a block keeper? I have a 14 inch square of felt like material that a 14 inch square of thicker gauge tablecloth plastic is sewn onto. The plastic is layed on top of the pinked felt square and a 1/4 inch seam is sewn on one side. A ribbon is sewn on the felt on the opposite side, in the middle. You put your unsewn block pieces in it to travel with. I've used mine a lot for going to classes for both sewn and unsewn blocks. You roll it up and tie the ribbon in a bow.
I have also used it for a quick quilting design trial template. I put my finished block under the plastic and use a dry erase marker to try out quilt designs. If you used different coloured felt and rolled them up, they would look cute in a container in the middle of the table.

Pin cushion in the shape and colour of a pumpkin (it was an Autumn retreat), a large thread catcher with the top pin cushion, a chance to win free LAQ from one of the members who donated it, homemade Martha Steward cookies and I can't remember all the others.
Smaller retreats that I sponsored: 2 1/2"x6 1/2" rulers, binding winders, plastic coated card of Jelly Roll instruction.
I really only know how to make quilts, no luck sewing anything else. I have wholesale accounts, so less expensive than buying retail.

So functional!!
This is the first thing that came to mind for me too, and it is not too time consuming to make if you have quite a few to prepare.

What about thread catchers? Plenty of patterns on TipNut.

1. A tabletop trash basket/scrap-thread holder for use at workshops
2. A flannel/other soft fabric case for slipping one's rotary cutter into (like glasses cases)
3. A long, thin "tube" with elastic at the bottom for holding those plastic grocery store bags
4. A smallish quilted square backed with that grippy shelf-liner to place beside your sewing machine to hold a pair of scissors, an awl, seam ripper, etc. right beside your work space. (Couldn't sew without mine!)
