I'm planning a denim quilt (rag quilt) made of old bluejeans. I've cut em into 6.5" squares. I plan on backing it with flannel... no batting.
My question is:
Should I use that heavy denim thread to join the denim/flannel blocks or is just regular multipurpose thread OK?

I use regular thread. It works great for me.
Good luck

Make sure that your stitches are close enough together in stitch length. When you use bigger stitches it pop loose pretty easy.

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure if I had to use that golden colored denim thread or not. Good tip about stitch length.
