Okay--see the barn doorway? My plan is to put a photo of a horse (my horse  ) in the barn door. I want to be doubly sure I'm printing them the right size.

The barn door is made from cutting a 3 3/4" square into 4 triangles--isn't that a 3 1/4" square piece--to be 3" when sewed in place?

In the pattern, for the pieces beside the barn door--I cut 3" by 4 1/4" rectangles. The piece over the barn door is 1 3/4" by 3".

This isn't making sense. Something's off. Or am I? :-o

it sounds like the finished size of the barn door is 3" x 3". that's 3.5" x 3.5" unfinished.

printe your photos 3.5" x 3.5". make sure you leave at least 3/4" all the way around the horse so you don't sew threw the poor thing's head. horses tend to get cranky when you do that.

Thanks!! Gracious--this is time consuming. I don't have many square photos. Plus I have a sick horse I'm checking on every 45 minutes. Good thing I'm on break! Pant, pant, pant.

What she said.

To make sure, you could check against width of piece under hay loft. Lots of ways to go with the horse, applique over a plain square to overlap head facing sideways. Straight forward, etc.

Myself, I am partial to a nice lightning rod on a barn. Weathervanes work too. My own barns have been decorated with horseshoe clovers (so the luck cannot run out), an old Hudson Valley theme. I love the quilt barns too.... or Mail pouch

Now you have me thinking of barn quilts. Do I really need a longer list?

I'm gonna try and sound smart and say, "I was gonna say what Patrice said."

I hope your horse is getting better! (What is his/her name?) Please let us know!

Hi Celeste~ It was Gypsy, one of my mares. She was showing some very strange symptoms: holding her head funny when she ate, and shivering in her hind end. No temp. She wasn't drinking at all--always a concern. I called the vet yesterday morning and she thought it was choke--but caught very early. So I followed procedure for that, but later didn't think that's what it was. I stalled everyone early so I could watch her input/output more closely. I gave her Banamine at 11:00 to feel I could sleep... this morning she seems fine. I don't 100% trust that yet. Something is up. Possibly an unlcer from a point on a tooth. But she's eating happily and wants to get out and play in the snow. I told her once she shows me another poop pile I'll let her out. Her buddies have to stay in too or there will be stress all around. I checked her every 45 min from 4-11 yesterday. Hope that won't be necessary today. Sigh.... so glad I'm home today and tomorrow. She timed it right there. :-)

i am so glad gypsy is better today.
sorry i can't help you on the measurements, barn, but when my eyes saw all those fractions, my little teeny brain wandered off and i have yet to locate her. i know she is around here somewhere but we had a traumatic experience in 5th grade and now fractions scare her. mr bruffett actually expected her to learn all those fractions, and long division, and times tables and she would have much rather been reading. poor little thing........

nanabirdmo--(what does all that mean?) you always make me smile.

If you had ME for 5th grade fractions would not be scary. We always refer to pans of brownies and pizzas when we talk fractions in my room. :D

Okay--the square had to be 3", but I could use most of what I printed off. Go to the picture section and see what I've done so far--I think I'm supposed to put them there--I like to follow the rules.

if i had had you for math in grade school maybe i woundn't have been so traumatized. although there was my freshman algebra I teacher who told us we should all be in an institution weaving baskets or painting spools. don't think teachers could tell kids that today (even if they thought it).
teachers were hard core in the 50's and 60's. and look how well we turned out :P :P :P :P :P

p.s. i checked out the pics of your project and it is going to be spectacular. can't wait to see the end result. you have mini horses??

barnbum -

You had me scared there for a minute! " It was Gypsy, one of my mares."
It's the word was that sent my heart rate into a tizzy! I'm glad she's better.
Whew! I hate it when our babies are not well!

nanobird- maybe if you found your brain, you could find mine too!
