I want to set on point like the picture in one of my books. The blocks measure 8 1/4" and In eed to figure out what size I need to make my corner triangles and also the setting triangles on the side. I used a calculation I found on the internet but it it did not seem right. what size do i cut the squares for the corner setting and the side settings?

The triangle will seem to big until you get it all sewed together. Are you expecting the bottom or side edge of your triangle to perfectly line up with the side of your square? If so you can't do that otherwise you will lose the points of your squares once you try sewing the rows together. It has been a long while since I sewed a quilt on point but I do recall the triangle sides and bottoms for the corner units were always way bigger than my squares. You need to center the square so an equal amount of "ear" comes off either end once sewn. Hope this makes sense.

What is the finished size of your blocks?

Remember the square you cut for the corners will be cut once on the diagonal to give you two triangles. The square for the side triangles will be very large because you will cut those twice on the diagonal to give you four side triangles.

Does this make sense?

I can kind of make out by the picture that your block is 8 1/4" unfinished meaning that it would be 7 3/4" finished. I would use the measurements given for the 8" finished block and just trim the excess after sewing them on.
