Default Help needed with measurements for Sawtooth Star block

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me. I am wanting to make a sawtooth star block quilt but I need help figuring out the math. I have a bunch of 4" center squares and I can't figure out what the sizes of the rectangles and squares for the side flying geese should be. I found one website that talked about multiplying by 7/8 and all that and I just don't get it. I would appreciate any help. Thank you!

Are your 4" center squares a finished size or are they unfinished at 4.5?

I use this method:
http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/how-to...g-flying-geese

Using this method cut 4 rectangles out of your background color 4" x 2" cut 4 squares out of your background color 2". cut 8 2" squares out of your star point color.

You will end up with a 6.5" unfinished block.

So the squares that will be sewn diagonally for the triangles don't have to add 7/8 to the size of the squares?

No that add 7/8 is for making two HST units but you described making your sawtooth star with FG units. (which is the way I usually make them, why put an extra seam in if you don't have to)

For what its worth, I save the cut off bits from the FG and sew those into HST. After trimming them you can make a 1 3/4" hst or trim down to 1.5" HST. I save them up to use them in scrap quilts.

OK I just wanted to be sure before I start chopping up my fabric since I only have a limited amount of this particular fabric. Thank you.
