I have always tied baby quilts. I use a matching color of embroidery floss( using all 6 strands0. I tie two very tight knots and clip leaving about 2 inches of the floss. This way I can retie if need be. All 7 of my grandchildern have tied quilts and Mom's have never had a problem.

I'm definately going to use the flannel. I'm Still unsure about the tying. Can I "tie" with a machine stitch? maybe a bar tack or other decorative stitch?

My problem is that I cut the fabric on the width, not realizing how much "give" this particular fabric had. The blocks will not lie flat, so I'm afraid that if I quilt the entire piece I will have lots of folds and puckers.

Thanks for the info about the buttons. I was going to look for the large primaray colored ones.... saves me one trip to the store.

Alice...I made a tablerunner that had an embroidered center and didn't want to quilt it or tie it so machine "tacked" with a design "star" instead and it turned out ..... so my answer would be yes to the tacking question...

I too would love to see your project once its done! :)

Me, too, me, too! Want to see it, that is! lol lol Really I do, there are kids all round the world that got baby quilts that were tied by me. There are some in England that were hand quilted, and my own kids had quilts yarn tied. (I'm saving them for my youngest son's children, he's 33 and still living here with us, you think I have a prayer's chance of more grandies or am I keeping clutter??)

The Star Tack sounds like the answer for you! I've used it before for detail and I love the look it gives. It should surely save the day with your wavy fabric, don't you think? Do let us know.

been reading various posts. even though i just started quilting in January of this year, I'm sure learning a lot, have to - i'm getting old. will answer several questions all at once - yes i have used flannel for batting, i wash all my material first, and it does great and it's so huggable. here's a lap quilt i made with the sew & flip method. and yes i machine tacked it with a lock stitch of a little heart. even did the binding with a decorative stitch instead of hand tacking. i sew the binding to the back instead of front, then bring the folded edge to front and pin, then sew that too on the front side with a continuing 'star' stitch. did great. this is sure a fast way to make a lap quilt, I'm making several for Christmas gifts.

i too sometimes sew the binding with a decorative stitch. fast and very cute.
love your quilt, so cheerful and the colors are great.
