I have made the 4 patch with a center panel. Mine was a Kaufman Van Gogh print. Turned out wonderful, will post a picture when it is quilted. Also don't over think the 4 patches, they can drive you crazy.

Appears that you will be making a medallion quilt, which is what the labels for various borders imply. Maybe you've found the originally intended design, but looks like you've got one that will work anyway. Happy sewing!
