With a 5 inch square, stitching is much easier if you use a ruler and pencil in a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew on that line.

If you dont want to worry about cutting the triangles and sewing on the bias, then the 9 1/2 square and 5 inch squares sewn on the diagonal onto the corners and trimmed is an easier process.
Either of these will work

I am so glad someone was able to work out all those sizs for me, never in a month of Sundays could I have done that, when I run out of fingers and toes to count on I am lost....LOL

I'm not good at all the math, but I think I would divide the block into 16 four and a half inch blocks.... the four corners, white squares; all the others, half-square triangles. I wish I could send a picture.

SORRY, IT DIDN'T PRINT AS I HAD EXPECTED THAT IT WOULD.
Te p/w means a purple and white half-square with the purple on the left and the white on the right. w/p is white on left, purple on right. The gr/bl is gray on left, black on right; bl/gr is black on left, gray on right. This segments the middle square, but makes it interesting. As you can tell, I love making half-aquares.
