can some one tell me how to start a quilt guild?
I have never been to one so I know nothing.
I have a friend that loves to quilt so I think she and I can get one started, If I knew what to do.

I would say the first thing is to put an ad in the paper looking for quilters. Figure out a meeting place and the rest will be history. Do you have a LQS? Maybe they would let you meet there the first couple of times.

Call a guild, and ask how they got started, you can find them on line listed by state.

We started a guild just by connecting with quilters her on QB!!!!! We're not big, less than a year old, but having a blast!

Visit a quilt guild in a nearby city to see how they do things. At least you can get the basic stucture, and then you can do what you want!! There are no rules!!

I belonged to a guild at a LQS until it closed. Some of the members have since joined a group where we sew once a month for the whole weekend..fri.sat.sun. We sew at a local Marriott hotel that charges us a very reasonable rate for their 2 conference rooms. The hotel is nearby so we do not stay over, but they do supply us with irons, ironing boards, fresh water, and basically whatever else we ask for. The cost for each of us is $50 for the whole weekend, you can set up your stuff and come and go as you please, and just leave your projects and machines etc. all set up. The rooms are never left unlocked when none of us are there so everything is secure. Also, some of our local quilt shops offer us a 15% discount for shopping on our "Marriott weekends". The weekends are really so much fun with help from those more expert at something, show and tells going on all weekend, and an instant resource if you are looking for a pattern or particular fabrics...and of course many opinions. I don't know if something like this would be practical for your area..I jst thought I would share.

actual guilds have guidelines to follow to become registered as a guild- you might want to start with a local quilting group- and as you become active in local activities- and there is an interest you can research the specific requirements to become an actual guild....it is not free- and it takes paper work- a board= there are a number of requirements

Sorry, I meant to say we pay $50 every two months, so we quilt for $25/weekend for 3 days.

Betty, I'd start by making a list of what you want your guild to be. A small group of friends sewing together? A group that teaches others to sew? There are lots and lots of possiblities... so the first thing may be just for you and your friend to sit down and talk about what you would want your group to look like. Then conduct research from there. Since you're organizing it, it can look however you want it to!
