I got a memory quilt years ago when undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer. Memory quilts are great no matter what the reason. MIne would be a generous twin --big enough to tuck up under my feet at night while watching TV and still can go almost to my chin! All 6 of my siblings and kids signed mine as well as my mom.
I guarantee whatever you decide, though, they will treasure it always!

Good ideas Bebe, I have the fabric. I was thinking of using photos, just not sure of what pattern to use.

I've recently seen USC fabric and UCLA fabric. Both were really cute. You might not want to do a whole lap quilt in them, but with a little imagination I think they could really work.

I agree not to do the whole quilt in the school fabric but to use other fabric with it. I'm new to quilting so I have a hard time "seeing" the finished quilt. Would you do nine patch or rail fence or other patterns?

Do the bear paw for the UCLA in the school colors. Look under quilter's cache what else looks interesting for the trojan. Do a star pattern or a maybe a log cabin.Maybe a 6 inch square and make it look like a star.

Yup, that's the same stuff I saw. With 2 yards each you could probably do just about anything you want! Be sure to post a pic when you're done so we can see it!
