The asterisk at the bottom of the cutting chart indicates that you cut two WOF pieces, sew them together at the short ends, then cut the 50 1/2" piece. It seems that way for all the wide stripes in the quilt top. Use the leftover pieces to make the shorter cuts. I would most likely stagger the seams on the WOF pieces so that they would not line up vertically. I really like this pattern -- most likely I will make a copy for quilt bucket list!

Right on ctrysass2012! My motto is KISQ or Keep It Simple Quilter! Jut sew two of those 6 1/2 strips together, sew the strip to the side of the quilt top, trim it even with the quilt top and use the left over to piece the next WOF strip. froggyintexas

Judy is probably correct it may be a border piece. It seems too long to not be pieced
