Hi all - I'm looking for some additional info on making a Shattered 9 patch - specifically the (black) trim around each individual piece. I have searched here and googled for a tutorial. I found lots of blogs and images but nothing 'helping' me ... I did find one class advertisement which indicated it was easier than it seems.

I'm pretty sure it is easy. I just went looking in my sewing room for a pattern i have somewhere, called shattered ... something. can't remember what. but i think it's star points sort of like a New York Beauty block. anyway, if I find that i will let you know. you can have it, i will never get around to making it. i will let you know if i find it.
look for more info on this one you are interested in. i'm sure there are tutes on doing it or free block maybe on quiterscache. good luck. CC

i found crazy nine patch blocks that would work too. you would have to add the black strips though.

Thanks! that looks to be the same layout - but i 'know' there is going to be some smashingly simple way to add the black trim to each...

I think you do it like any black strip method, but you need to cut the slashes in the same spots, and use a different fabric for each addition. So start with 12 different blocks, slash them all in the same spot, add the black, then add a different fabric to the other side of the black. Slash them all again in the same spot,then add the black, and again add a different fabric to the other side. Slash again... Wash, rinse, repeat. Does that make any sense? At least that is my best guess from looking at it. I bet it would be fun. I might try it for my toddler for Christmas anyhow.

Makes total sense ... and probable more so than if I'd tried to explain it!

It's a Slash-The-Stash technique.

The easiest way to get them to be all slashed in the same place .... stack them up into one pile. Or if too many fabrics, then two piles, etc.

At the end you will need to square them all up, as they may have gotten slightly off-sized or off-square with all the slashing, piecing and stitching.

You've got me intrigued with this pattern ... and I've been thinking about making it for a Christmas gift.

Curious ... how would you quilt this?
