There is also stamping of the fabric with the hexagon shape (or other shapes). Search online for the product.

For small pieces (1/4 inch, up to maybe 2 inches on a side) I use English paper piecing because it controls any bias stretch/distortion. Machine sewing such short seams would really not suit me. I also think a whip stitched seam (EPP) will have a bit more give than a running stitch (traditional hand piecing), so the threads are less likely to break after the quilt is done. Hundreds of years of quilting tradition probably disagree with me on that point, but I'm more comfortable with EPP.

For larger pieces I would use my machine. I'm not afraid of y-seams, but many people find them easier to manage by hand than on machine.

Ultimately, the method you use is should be whatever works best for you. I know I've read blogs and QB posts by people that do this type of piecing by hand without papers; if that suits you, then go for it!

I have used the Cindy Blackburn stamps for hexies. It stamps out the cut line and sew line. No papers to baste to, just regular hand sewing. It worked well for me.

It sounds like you are doing something similar to Inklingo. I love to do it that way and will do it no other way. It is similar to what cjsews mentioned only you print the shapes with your printer.

Thanks everyone for you responses. It makes sense that on a large project it would get distorted. I have purchased the stamp after seeing it mention on this quilt board.

Making hexagons the English paper piecing method makes it a simple "on the go" project that is easy to take with you when you know there will be waiting time with appointments and such.

AnnaPf, I stopped EPP when I discovered Inklingo. You can do all of this so much more quickly. I've posted information on my blog which you see in my signature.
