    Holiday project with DGD

    Greetings!

I just thought I'd share an idea I had to do some crafting with DGD (age 5) when she visits over the Christmas holiday. She's really into puzzles now and also likes crafting. I think we're going to work together to make one of the Penguin Cheer blocks from FatCat Patters. It's one of their BOMs right now. DGD picked #4 with the penguins and the string of lights.

I thought it would be kind of like a puzzle for her to put the applique pieces on the backing and press them down (with adult assistance). I would probably do the quilting and make it into a wall hanging for her. I'll have to mail her the end result after she goes home.

That's a really cute idea and you'll be making memories that she'll always treasure. I hope you have a wonderful holiday together.

Great idea! She can do fabric selection, some of the rough cutting of the fusible and final pieces, and maybe like to help with the sewing. My machine can be set for very slow speed so I have children press the foot pedal, stopping before each pin and removing them. Some like to put the pins in a bowl and "collect" them with a magnet to put into the pincushion. If you take a few pics she'll have photos to show friends. Have a great time!

Looks like fun! With the bonus of a possible future quilter added to the mix

Geri B ~ I gave the link. They have been offered as a free BOM, but if you miss one month, you then would have to purchase that block, or you can purchase the whole quilt pattern.

DGD and I have had fun putting it together. We just have the last two borders to do before sandwiching and quilting. Unfortunately, she goes home tomorrow. I asked her if she wanted me to finish it and mail it to her or wait till we are together again so she can help me finish it. She wants me to wait for her.

Yeah DJ! If she wants you to wait for her the hook is set! Even if she wanders away from sewing/quilting in the busy teen/college years I bet she comes back to it. And who knows, she may be one of those multitalented, multiple interests teens who sew up a storm. Either way you have started her on the path. Way to go!

We got it this far before she had to leave. Will save sandwiching and quilting for another visit.
