This design from the first link sent to you would be both easy and suitable.

I googled Muslim quilt patterns:

http://www.listia.com/auction/428472...ian-knot-quilt

There more sites given there, too.

I think I would say away from anything religious. He may not want to advertise his Muslim faith since it can be an issue with some people. Other than that I would think any quilt pattern would be OK. He probably wouldn't know one pattern from another anyway.

I wouldn't put anything to do with faith on the quilt. Do something like a wall hanging that is log cabin with a heart design. I've seen that wall hanging quite a bit and think it would be appropriate. But I'd stay away from religion completely.

i go with bearisgray, just send him a thank you note, that's what I did with the doctor that did my complicated surgery. I look at it like this - doctors chose their profession, they take an oath, he was paid in full and I owe him nothing more than a thank you.

Any pattern is good, you can add some words in Arabic like "Allah", "Mohammad", or "Salam" (Peace). If you go on google and type " allah in English " they give you the Arabic image of the word which you could applique or may be even with piecing. If you google " Mohammad in Arabic writing " you get the symbol that might be easier to copy or duplicate as is " peace in Arabic ". However, even using these terms in English would be great, as are anything mosaic in design. I think what are you are planning to do is awesome and it will be most appreciated. Best wishes to you as well.

Thank you so much for your replies. He has been much more than the "usual doctor" and has several Arabic "signs" in his office which I have not asked to be translated. Other than that, I want him to have a special gift.

I like the medical symbol and the heart symbols both and may incorporate something like that. OTOH, I love the complicated tile patterns. Again, my objective in asking is to know the appropriateness of the subject.

I am an ordained minister and love when people give me faith related items, coffee cups, etc. for my office.
