How big of a space can you leave unquilted?
#1
I am making a quilt for my son. I am quilting it by machine (stitch in the ditch) and I want to leave the 8 inch blocks unquilted except for between the blocks. Will the quilt batting hold up if it is not quilted in the middle of the blocks?

Even if you do have a batt that allows that much space for quilting it is a good idea to do something in that large of a space. Over the years the batt may separate and end up being little balls inside the quilt.

the density of quilting requirements is directly dictated by your batting, you have to read your packaging to find your answer. some batts require quilting every 2" some you can have up to 10" between quilting lines...and all measurments in between. it is important for a good outcome to follow the requirments the batting package says.

in the blocks just make a block in side for quilting. that would look cool i think. but deffinatly check the requirments. 8" is a very large space to leave unquilted though. you don't want the batting to break down and make it puffy there eventually.
