How to convert an older sewing machine cabinet.

I was told there is a rather easy way to convert an older sewing machine cabinet so I can put my new free arm sewing machine into it. Any ideas where I can find this out?

I have my mom's walnut sewing cab from the 40's, would love it if someone comes up with an answer!
