Sometimes I just cut around my template with the rotary cutter - although the template has gotten nicked doing that - other times I've drawn a pencil line around the Auditioning piece and have cut with scissors - whichever works out better/easier for you is fine.
As long as the piece is at least 5 inches square when I get it ,I will be happy. I can always trim it down a bit if necessary.
(I won't have a major fit if it's skimpy - I have a stack of 4.5 inch squares, too)
Things just go together better when they are approximately the same size.
(I was in a math/science/engineering class once where we were taught that an "exact" measurement is almost impossible to achieve - everything was plus or minus something for variance)
That's where I picked up the attention to dimensions - and from trying to put blocks together that weren't the same size - I forgot to measure ahead of time.
That old "too soon old, too late smart" thing - - -

I figured out the repeat I needed to cut a strip. Then I cut the 5" out of the strip. Depending on the pattern, there may be a little waste - but at that point, I wasn't worried about it. The "leftovers" didn't really work for anything else.
