For my wall hanging a put a sleeve on the back and slide a dowl rod thru.
How do you hang the quit with dowel on the wall. At my house I balance it on 2 nails on the wall but at my daughter's house the hanging keeps falling off the wall as her kids bump it. Can you make a loop at each end of the quilt that is attached to the quilt to slide the rod thru and then hang that on the nails? Other suggestions? (yes I did a search but could not find an answer.)

I baste my dowel rods to the back of my quilts with a whip stitch the entire length of the dowel. I use this for only the small quilts. Then accurately place 2 nails in your wall and make sure they are closer together than the dowels length. The threads will help anchor the dowel to the nail heads, especially if you make your stitches shorter. I baste this dowel right along the edge of the binding, or parrell to it, that has been stitched on the backing. If your quilt is square, your dowel should be very level. The other thing I don't use is the nail. I use small 3M removable wall hooks. I like the ones with a hook that will hold the dowel better. In this case, my dowel rod is stitched lower on the back to hide the plastic hook from showing. I used my laser level and then applied 3 of the hooks to the wall for each dowel.

Addition thought that just came to me. Forget the dowel but keep the 3 M stickly tape. Apply the tape to the back side of a piece of velcro and sew the opposite pieces of velcro to the back of the quilt with basting stitches. The velcro can later be removed from both the wall and quilt and will keep the quilt close to the wall. I used a boughten 3M product like this for posters in our Man Cave.

I have a quilt using a rod like you have. I used 3M Command Strip hangers on the ends to hang the rod. The quilt hangs on a wall that is next to our bedroom and the DVD movies that we have are also stored next to it. So it sees LOTS of bodies walking by and stand next to it. I am sure it has been touch and pushed just a few time Not once has it falling off!! Bonus on my part, no holes in the wall since we are living in a rental!!

I sew the small, white, round curtain rings on each end on the back for smaller wallhangings. Then I put two small nails in the wall and put the curtain rings over them.

I don't use dowel ... rather the thin trim strips (about 3/4" wide). Cut to measure, and put one of those saw tooth hangers in the centre. The hanging sleeve on the back of the quilt is in two parts so the saw tooth peeps thru OR I use the corner triangle method.

We use a thin strip too, only we just put two holes in it and use these nail-type art hangers (they are brass, have a thin finishing nail type head, and a little brass washer - they sit at a slight angle, you hammer it into the wall so the washer is flush with the wall and the nail hangs at a slight angle up. You slide the wood trim onto the nails with the pre-made holes and voila! Hanging away, reasonably secure (I can't say I have never knocked one off the wall) and they hang quite flat if done correctly.

i make my sleeve in two sections, also. that way, i have a choice whether to hang it on a single pushpin/nail, or hang by a ribbon looped over each end of the dowel. i prefer not to put a loop/ring at each side of the quilt as one must make the hanging nails exactly level, and i'm not very good at that

I just LOVE those hooks. FYI I use them on the edge of my sewing table to keep cords easy to reach, or my rulers & sissor
