I've sewn for years. But when I went to grooming school, I learned that in grooming, you put your THUMB and your RING FINGER in the two holes. My instructor said that she even held a scissors that way when sewing. Guess what? Now, when sewing I cannot pick up the scissors any other way, than this grooming way, with the ring finger. I mention this, because I thought I would throw the idea out there....it you try it, you have WAY MORE control over the shears this way. Maybe it's not so important now that we use rotary cutters so much. I suggest that you give it a try, and let me know how you feel about it!

I use the thumb and 3 fingers, I don't think I could hold up the scissors with only two.

I use my thumb in the top part, and my middle and ring fingers in the bottom part. Works for me!

It depends on what kind of scissors I'm using. If they are grooming shears (for hair) they have two small holes, sometimes with a "pinky" loop at the end. I use thumb and ring finger for these and small sewing scissors.

My large sewing shears though have a small thumb hole and a much larger "hand" hole - I think most of think you are talking about THESE scissors ... in which case I use my thumb in the small hole and the remainder of my whole hand in the large hole. These scissors are usually much too heavy, and not intended to use the two finger method.

Are you grooming dogs or people? I groom dogs (well, my own anyway).

Depends on what I am cutting. Just to snip thread, I will use thumb and ring finger but if I am squaring up I use thumb and three fingers so that my hand does not get as tired.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.........do it so automatically after all these years I had to grab a pair of scissors to see how I actually DID hold them................small scissors, thumb and ring finger....large shears, thumb and pinkie, ring finger and middle finger

First I would have to find my sissors ! Seems like no matter how many I have they aren't where I need them to be.
I will give your method a try when I find them.

Never having thought about it before I now can't decide whether I would normally use my middle or ring finger with my thumb for small scissors - it is too automatic, but apparently not automatic enough for me to give a decisive answer!!
